About the role
The Technology Group in Are Media is responsible for delivering and maintaining the technology components of all projects across the business. The team plays a crucial role by providing stakeholders with the expertise to help them make informed decisions.
Reporting to the IT Development Manager - Digital, the Software Developer – PHP/Wordpress will:
Developers will deliver and provide 3rd level support according to standards covering technology, methodology, and processes as well as meeting requirements defined by the business stakeholders. Collaboration and teamwork are key success factors.
Duties
- Develops strong collaborative relationships with business stakeholders at all levels, based on trust, respect and taking accountability for the successful delivery of technology projects.

Ensures the quick turnaround of critical support issues for production systems.

Frequently seeks opportunities to augment customer satisfaction and deepen client relationships

Assesses requirements for completeness and clarifies where required.

Contributes to team estimation of development work so that business stakeholders can make informed decisions.

Develops and maintains customer-facing websites using WordPress, hosted in WPEngine

Creates custom WordPress plugins and develops rich, interactive Gutenberg blocks using modern JavaScript frameworks, with a strong emphasis on React.

Writes PHP code using object-oriented paradigms, software design patterns and software development principles such as DRY, KISS and SOLID.

Works with vendors to consume or publish APIs, such as REST services.

Understands, follows, and contributes to the standard framework components used by the team.

Understands, follows, and contributes to the standards and processes used by the team.

Ensures development work (both coded by oneself and from other developers via code reviews) conform to agreed standards.

Delivers solutions that meet business requirements within agreed time and budget constraints.

Ensures solutions are documented and kept up-to-date.

Participates in systems architecture discussions.

Ensures the correct toolsets and processes are in place and that all relevant staff are trained and equipped to deliver successfully.

Ensures applications are kept in a maintainable state, both for current and future team members to inherit.

- Skills and experience
- 3+ years professional experience in WordPress development
- Strong proficiency in PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Experience using front-end JavaScript frameworks, such as React
- Solid understanding of Wordpress core functionalities, themes and plugins.
- Experience in custom theme development and plugin customization, including Gutenberg blocks.
- Familiarity with responsive design principles and mobile-first development.
- Exposure to MySQL database design and writing SQL.
- An understanding of object-oriented paradigms, software design patterns and software development principles, such as DRY, KISS and SOLID.
- Experience with consuming 3rd party APIs such as REST services.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Excellent ability to prepare technical and support documentation.
- Familiarity with Agile development methodologies, practices and principles.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Possesses the confidence to raise issues when required and collaborates to find optimal solutions.
- Experience with WordPress Multisite environments.
- Experience with CI/CD practices (e.g. Github Actions).

- Desirable Skills
- Experience with cloud hosting platforms, especially WPEngine and AWS.
- Familiarity with containerized development environments.
- Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.
