About the role
This is a maximum term (12 months), full-time Art Director position working on custom books spanning Are Media's diverse portfolio of titles, reporting to the Books Director. This exciting opportunity allows you to create compelling visual narratives across our iconic Australian lifestyle brands while collaborating with a talented creative team in a dynamic publishing environment.
Duties
- Develop and execute creative visual concepts for custom book projects across Are Media's brand portfolio
- Art direct photography sessions and coordinate with photographers, stylists, and creative talent for book content
- Create layouts and design solutions that align with individual brand guidelines and editorial vision
- Collaborate with editors, writers, and the Books Director to translate content into visually engaging book formats
- Manage design workflows and production timelines to ensure quality output and meet publishing deadlines
- Present creative concepts and design solutions to stakeholders and senior management
- Stay current with design trends and publishing industry best practices to maintain competitive edge
Skills and experience
- Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, or related creative field with 5+ years art direction experience
- Expert proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite with strong understanding of print production and publishing workflows
- Portfolio demonstrating exceptional design skills in book layout, typography, and visual storytelling
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously in deadline-driven publishing environments
- Strong communication and presentation skills with collaborative leadership abilities
- Previous experience in publishing, book design, or lifestyle media preferred
- Knowledge of photography direction, styling coordination, and content management systems desirable
- Passion for Australian lifestyle brands with meticulous attention to detail and creative vision
