The Role

The General Manager, Entertainment is a pivotal leadership role, responsible for driving the growth, performance and future direction of Are Media’s Entertainment content vertical!

Spanning six of Australia’s most iconic and trusted entertainment brands - New Idea, WHO, Women's Day, that's life!, Take 5 and TV WEEK - this portfolio reaches millions of Australians and sits at the heart of the company’s success.

This is a dynamic, commercially focused role where you will lead a high-performing team to unlock new opportunities for growth across a diverse revenue mix, including circulation, subscriptions, advertising, and a rapidly expanding content commerce offering spanning affiliate and partnership channels. A key priority will be accelerating the growth of direct, owned audiences through data-led acquisition and retention strategies, strengthening first-party relationships that fuel both recurring revenue and long-term brand value.

With full accountability for the P&L, you will set the pace for sustainable growth, making smart investment decisions, championing innovation, and fostering strong cross-functional collaboration. You will play a critical role in evolving the portfolio, diversifying revenue streams, and building new commercial opportunities to ensure these market-leading brands continue to thrive in a rapidly changing media landscape.

What you’ll be doing

  • Set the strategy: Define and deliver the Entertainment division’s growth strategy, increasing profitability, audience engagement and revenue across print, digital, social, audio, video and commerce.
  • Own commercial performance: Lead the division’s P&L, managing revenue, investment and costs to achieve EBITDA targets and support sustainable growth.
  • Build direct audience relationships: Grow registered users, email subscribers and first-party data, strengthening the foundations for retention, personalisation and monetisation.
  • Create new revenue streams: Develop and scale direct-to-consumer products, including memberships, subscriptions, audio, vodcasts and other brand-led opportunities.
  • Lead through transformation: Inspire and develop a high-performing team, building digital capability and successfully guiding people through change.

About you

We’re looking for someone who brings:

  • Senior commercial leadership experience: A strong track record leading a content, media, entertainment or consumer-focused business, with full P&L and budget accountability.
  • Digital growth expertise: Demonstrated success building or scaling subscriptions, memberships, direct-to-consumer products or other recurring-revenue models.
  • Audience and data capability: A practical understanding of first-party data, CRM and lifecycle marketing, and how these drive acquisition, retention and commercial value.
  • Content and brand judgement: Experience shaping multi-format content and brand strategies that respond to audience needs while delivering business results.
  • Transformational leadership: The ability to set a compelling vision, bring teams with you through change and create a culture of accountability, innovation and high performance.
