About the role
As a sub-editor you will be part of the editorial team in our central Auckland office responsible for ensuring that the content of the New Zealand Listener is produced to the highest standard. You will work closely with the Chief Sub-Editor, Editor and Digital Editor and be accountable for the quality, accuracy and content creation excellence of the brand across all platforms and channels.
Duties
- Sub, proofread, amend, and cut copy to fit
- Check quality of copy and rewrite or re-angle copy if necessary
- Check story facts rigorously
- Take lead responsibility for the collation of the TV listings section
- Liaise with writers, designers and other parties to finalise features & columns
Skills and experience
The ideal candidate will have a minimum 3+ years’ experience of sub-editing on a leading masthead, as well as an abiding interest in, and depth of knowledge of, core Listener content: NZ and world politics, health, education, science, environmental issues, business & finance, literature, visual and performing arts, film and television. A degree in journalism or in any interesting humanities field would be helpful but not essential. You'll be familiar with InDesign, have top technical and grammatical skills, absolute accuracy and attention to detail, be a rigorous fact-checker, witty caption writer and have sound knowledge of media law, defamation and copyright.
